So many womans health is effected by kidney stones. Boy! do they hurt. We all want to learn how to stay healthy. In an effort to help you learn to stay healthy, especially with womens health, I copied this from "Ask the Scientist" at http://GetHealthyReleaseWeight.usana.com/
"Many studies have investigated the role of nutrition in helping to reduce kidney stones. A recent study conducted by Brigham and Womens' Hospital and Harvard Medical School found that previous recommendations to limit dairy products in an effort to reduce the risk of kidney stones were misguided. This study, conducted on more than 90,000 women showed that "women with the highest intake of dietary calcium had the lowest risk of kidney stones". This suggests that calcium may actually have a protective effects by binding to oxalate in the gut and preventing its absorption into a form that leads to kidney stones.
Another large scale study on calcium and kidney stones concluded that high calcium intake decreases the risk of symptomatic kidney stones. Perhaps, just as importantly, the study found that individuals consuming less than 850 mg of calcium per day actually had a higher incidence of kidney stones.
Wow! That sure will help us stay healthy! More calcium - less stones.
In general, the intake of calcium through food or supplements does not contribute to an increased incidence of kidney stones. In fact, with a very few exceptions, getting adequate dietary calcium actually reduces your risk for kidney stones."
Common sense says if you currently suffer from kidney stones and really want to have good health, we recommend consulting with a physician to determine the best course of action.
For men and womans health it is best to take calcium supplements with meals in order to effectively inhibit oxalate absorption."

Women - Menopause - Thyroid and Weight Gain
Menopause is a time of profound transition which is a nice way of saying Yipes! I'm getting old!
Menopause effects both the mind and body, particularly the thyroid and for those of you who don't know - Hypothyroidism makes you FAT!! In my opinion, the best way to restore healthy thyroid function is naturally through food and supplementation. My opinion comes from my personal expereince working with a wonderful women Naturopath - Dr. Laura Heib, Renton, Washington.
Nutrient-rich foods to replenish thyroid health
* Iodine (I): seaweed (e.g., nori), clams, shrimp, haddock, oysters, salmon, sardines, pineapple, eggs.
* Selenium (Se): smoked herring, smelt, wheat germ, Brazil nuts (just one nut provides ~139 mcg), apple cider vinegar, scallops, barley, lobster.
* Zinc (Zn): fresh oysters, ginger root, pecans, dry split peas, Brazil nuts, egg yolk, whole wheat, rye, oats, peanuts.
* Vitamin E: wheat germ oil, olive oil, sunflower seeds, almonds, peanuts.
* Vitamin A: dark green leafy veggies, liver, winter squash, cantaloupe, stone fruits, papaya, and cod liver oil.
* B vitamin complex: brewer’s yeast, wild rice, brown rice, whole wheat, beans, peanuts.
* Vitamin C: Red chili, guava, parsley, dark green leafy veggies, strawberries, papaya, citrus fruits.
* Support your adrenals. If this is the only thing you do, I promise it will benefit your health on many levels. Not only will supporting your adrenals lighten the burden on your thyroid, it will also help restore your energy levels and overall well-being.
* Start using a quality multivitamin–mineral. I encourage all my clients, especailly perimenopausal and menopausal, to take a pharmaceutical-grade supplement like our Essential Nutrients. Giving your body proper nutrition by supplementing your diet may be all you need to get yourself back on track.PLEASE NOTE: The FDA regulates supplements in the USA - they only check the health standards of the manufacturing company. The DO NOT check for quality and quantity of ingredient in the products. In other words, They often RIP YOU OFF AT THE COST OF YOUR HEALTH.
* Consider supplementing with selenium and iodine. Ask your practitioner to test your iodine levels in addition to your multivitamin. You can do this through the foods you eat or with selenium or iodine supplements.
Please work with a professional Naturopatic Doctor to monitor your levels appropriately. And when it comes to selenium supplements, I do not recommend taking more than 200 mcg/day.
* Reduce stress. Most Women give too much to those around us. Learn to say "No, I can not do that for you." and reduce YOUR Stress. Don’t feel guilty about asking for help yourself. You deserve a break — and so do the cells in your body!
Remember to have your Naturopath check your thyroid levels once a year, to stay on top of any changes. Prevention is easier than repairing your thyroid.

So You Want to be Fit at Fifty?
So you want to be fit at 50?
By 50 years old we have done so much to our bodies. We need to start by learning how to protect ourselves if we want to be strong, healthy and fit at fifty. No matter what your age I promise you will have more energy, be stronger, less headaches..... if you avoid the following toxins.
Carcinogens cause genetic alternations that lead to cancerous tumors and promote the growth of cancer cells.
Immunotoxic Chemicals damage or interfere with your bodies immune system
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's found in many household products such as cleansers, aerosol sprays, dry cleaned clothing, paint, gasoline. All are toxic to both the nervous and immune systems. They have also been linked to brain tumors and leukemia in children.
Phthalates are used to make countless household items: toys, shower curtains, nail polish, wall paper. These chemicals have been linked to birth defects, miscarriages, cancer, heart and lung problems.
A 2002 EPA study showed at least 2/3 of Americans live in areas where toxic chemicals in the air raise the risk of cancer.
So vigilance is the first step in being fit at 50 or any age for that matter. I have made alot of changes over the last few years and my fitness at fifty is better than ever. Good enough to keep up with my four kids (3 of which are under 10 years old)

Vitamin B and Depression
Low intakes of the B vitamins are thought to contribute to depression in some people, but until now there has been little supporting evidence from population-based studies of older adults.
In a recent study published online in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers examined whether certain dietary intakes of vitamin B6, vitamin B12, and folic acid correlated with symptoms of depression.
The study group consisted of 3,503 adults aged 65 and older who were followed over an average of 7.2 years. Vitamin intakes from diet and supplements were assessed using food frequency questionnaires, and the presence of depression was measured periodically using a standardized version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale.
After ≤12 years of follow-up, higher B vitamin intakes (including supplementation) were associated with a lower risk of depressive symptoms. The lowered risk remained after adjusting for age, sex, race, education, income, and anti-depressant medication use. The risk of developing depression symptoms decreased by 2 percent for every 10mg (milligram) increase in daily vitamin B6 intake. The same effect was true for every 10µg (microgram) increase in vitamin B12 intake. Increased intakes of the B vitamins through food intake alone did not significantly reduce depression incidence.
Both vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 are involved in healthy nervous system function, but because older adults often have difficulty absorbing the B12 found naturally in food, fortified foods and a multivitamin may be necessary to reach beneficial levels.
The results of this research indicate that high total intakes of vitamins B6 and B12 may be protective against depressive symptoms in older adults. Be sure to always get Pharmaceutical Grade Supplements
Supplements are not regulated in the USA for their potency. Research before you waste your money and your health.

New Research on Preventing Retinitis Degeneration
New research supports the use of 12 mg of lutein each day to slow visual field loss in adults with retinitis pigmentosa, a genetic eye condition.
The right supplement at the right time.
Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a common form of retinal degeneration. This disorder causes a progressive loss of photoreceptor cells in the eye and can eventually lead to blindness. Daily intake of 15,000 IU of vitamin A palmitate is known to reduce the progression of the disease and can sometimes postpone blindness for many years.
In newly published research, scientists sought to determine whether supplementation with lutein – a nutrient found in yellow/orange and dark green leafy vegetables – could slow visual decline in patients with RP who were already receiving vitamin A.
A randomized, controlled, double-blinded trial of 225 nonsmoking patients (ages 18 to 60) took place over 4 years. Each day, patients consumed a tablet of 12 mg of lutein or placebo. All participants were given 15,000 IU/day of vitamin A palmitate.
Over the course of the study, a decrease in visual sensitivity loss was seen in the lutein+vitamin A group. The average decline was smallest in the individuals with the highest serum lutein levels.
In this group of participants, lutein supplementation of 12 mg/day was effective at slowing visual sensitivity loss, and could therefore delay or prevent the occurrence of blindness even better than treatment with vitamin A alone.
Berson EL, et al. Clinical Trial of Lutein in Patients with Retinitis Pigmentosa Receiving Vitamin A. 2010. Arch Ophthalmol 128(4):403-11.

Preventing Heart Disease with Zinc
Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress are important risk factors for heart disease. My first and most powerful suggestion as an Online Weight Loss coach to my clients to reduce chronic inflammation is cut out processed food and refined sugar. Adding Pharmacultical Quality Supplementation is my second and equally important suggestion.
Zinc is an essential mineral with both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant functions. Because of these properties, zinc may play a role in protecting the heart.
To examine the effect of zinc on markers of inflammation, researchers conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of zinc supplementation in elderly subjects. Forty healthy elderly subjects (aged 56-83 years) were randomly assigned to 2 groups. One group received placebo; the other received 45 mg of zinc per day for 6 months.
Compared to the placebo, six months of zinc supplementation increased plasma zinc concentrations and decreased several markers associated with inflammation. Higher zinc levels were also related to a decrease in markers associated with oxidative stress.
The findings of this research suggest that zinc may have a protective effect in coronary artery disease thanks to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Body Maintenance 101
It Sounds gross but cracking your knuckles does not actually hurt your bones or cause arthritis. The sound you hear is just gas bubbles bursting. Cracking your knuckles (or any of your joints) can have therapeutic benefits. When you crack one of your joints you are pulling the bones that are connected at the joint apart from each other. This process stimulates your tendons, relaxes your muscles, and loosens your joints.Chiropractors get paid alot to do this for spinal joints when your back is sore and stiff, but you can do this on your own for your knuckles, toes, knees, neck, etc.
Unfortunately, there can be too much of a good thing. Cracking your knuckles will never lead to arthritis (despite what your mom keeps telling you), but scientists have discovered that it can cause tissue damage in the affected joints. Knuckle-cracking pulls your finger bones apart which stretches your ligaments. Too much stretching of your ligaments will cause damage to your fingers akin to the arm injuries sustained by a baseball pitcher who throws too many pitches. In addition to making your hand really sore, this ligament damage can also result in reduced grip strength.
How does this work? Your joints, the places in your body where you can bend, are where your bones intersect and are held together by ligaments. These joints are surrounded by a liquid called synovial fluid. When you stretch your ligaments by pulling the bones apart to crack your knuckles a gas in the synovial fluid escapes and turns into a bubble. This process is called cavitation. Cavitation ends when the bubble eventually bursts, producing that popping sound we know and love. After that, your joints won't be able to crack for another 25-30 minutes while the gas gets reabsorbed into the synovial fluid.

Good Food equals Good Health and Permanent Weight Loss
Mustard works wonders on a hot dog but it might be a weight loss wonder too. A wonder given to us by nature is always a better choice than something full of chemicals and additives.
Turmeric, the spice that gives mustard its color, may slow the growth of fat tissues, a study in the journal Endocrinology finds. Tumeric is also an anti-inflamatory food and there are strong indications that inflamation is at the root of many degenerative diseases. I have been using it for arthritus and it seems to help. At the very least I know it isn't hurting me. The worst that could come from too much turmeric is I will turn yellow.
So spice it up and smear it on. Mustard is low in calories- high in flavor. Mix it into tuna instead of mayo. Blend the spicy style with Bragg (soy sauce substitiute) for a healthy flavorful marinade.

Diabetics - It's not just a choice, It's a Lifestyle
Everyone agrees that the underlying cause of over 90% of type 2 diabetes is the result of poor lifestyles that create insulin resistance. Eating highly processed, high-glycemic carbohydrates along with our sedentary lifestyle are the main reasons we are getting so sick and so fat. Modern diets around the world are made up of more highly processed foods than the body can quickly absorb which over-stimulate and abuse our insulin in the body’s attempt to control blood sugars. It’s like hollering “wolf” all the time. When you are continually over-stimulating the release of insulin in an attempt to control blood sugar levels, eventually your body just does not respond to insulin like it once did. Adding to this is the fact that a sedentary lifestyles cause our bodies to be less and less sensitive to insulin.
These poor lifestyles cause us to become less sensitive to our insulin and over the years, we eventually develop what is referred to as insulin resistance. The body compensates by making more and more insulin. As blood insulin levels begin to rise, we literally tip over into an abnormal metabolic state called the metabolic syndrome. This causes high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and also causes us to begin gaining an unusual amount of weight around our middle. Eventually the body just can’t keep making that much insulin and as insulin levels begin to drop these individuals then become diabetic.
If you have a strong history of diabetes in your family, you are even more vulnerable and this is especially true for our children. Genetic susceptibility appears to be a major factor for our children in developing diabetes. However, even if you have a strong family history of diabetes this does not mean that you have no choice in the matter and you are just going to develop diabetes. Genetic tendency to develop diabetes has been present over the past several generations; however, it has only been during the past generation that we have been severely affected.
I've changed my lifestyle and you can too. It's simple and easy since I've discovered the secret to Get Healthy and Release Weight....forever.

Cinnamon for your Health
Health Tip of the Day -
Could it be any easier? 1/4 tsp. of cinnamon everyday may help lower blood sugar, fats and cholesterol by 30%. Real info or something goofy I came up with one my own? No, it from Reuters Health.
Apparently, cinnamon contains compounds that help make insulin more efficent. Type 2 Diabetes arises when the body loses sensativity to insulin. And when you have insulin resistance you can have FAT around your middle that will not go away, HEART disease, FATIGUE, MOODINESS, KIDNEY disease and uncontrolable CRAVINGS to name a few of the miserable things waiting for you.
So many times we hear cutting out the yummy things are good for our health. I like adding something tasty. A dash in my morning shake, on my latte's foam, on toast, in my cooking rice.... I can even drop a cinnimon stick in boiling water and make tea. If only every cure was so easy.

Nutritional or Un-Nutritional Supplements
Unlike Canada and Australia, the United States does not regulate supplements. According to the FDA, supplements are considered a food-grade product and are held to the same health department standards as restaurants. The facility has to be clean and maintained, and the ingredients can't be harmful. But that is it!
But what really blows me away is that what is on the label of a supplement does not have to be in the bottle!! In a recent study, researchers found that over half of supplements do not even properly disintegrate. So if it isn't disintegrating, then it isn't dissolving, then how are the needed nutrients getting into your system to be used? I have heard nurses say that they call a certain well-known over the counter multi-vitamin "bed pan bullets" because you can still read the name on the tablet when it is passed through the body. We literally flushed thousands of dollars down the toilet.
Proper disintegration is just one factor!! Another study showed that when tablets were tested, two tablets in the same bottle could have a different amount of nutrients. This is why taking a pharmaceutical-grade supplement is so important! Pharm-grade products have very stringent regulations and inspections and their potency has to be guaranteed. Call your product manufacturer and ask if you can get a potency guarantee in writing. If they don't give a written guarantee I know one company that does!

You can change your health
Spent last night introducing a group of health seekers to the concept of HOPE. We can change our lives and regain our health. Releasing weight is such a minor thing when you realize how many awful degenerative diseases you can avoid by simply
1) Eat every 2 - 3 1/2 hours
2) Drink water - 80 oz.
3) Exercise 45 minutes or 10,000 steps (get a pedometer)
4) Eat 6 super foods each day. These are basically whole foods
5) Take high quality vitamins (look for pharmaceutical grade)
The Hope comes from following a program, something to give you support, guidance and a way to get in touch with the programs or self-defeating thoughts that caused us all to fail in the past.
1) Eat every 2 - 3 1/2 hours
