Women - Menopause - Thyroid and Weight Gain

Menopause is a time of profound transition which is a nice way of saying Yipes! I'm getting old!

Menopause effects both the mind and body, particularly the thyroid and for those of you who don't know - Hypothyroidism makes you FAT!! In my opinion, the best way to restore healthy thyroid function is naturally through food and supplementation. My opinion comes from my personal expereince working with a wonderful women Naturopath - Dr. Laura Heib, Renton, Washington.

Nutrient-rich foods to replenish thyroid health

* Iodine (I): seaweed (e.g., nori), clams, shrimp, haddock, oysters, salmon, sardines, pineapple, eggs.
* Selenium (Se): smoked herring, smelt, wheat germ, Brazil nuts (just one nut provides ~139 mcg), apple cider vinegar, scallops, barley, lobster.
* Zinc (Zn): fresh oysters, ginger root, pecans, dry split peas, Brazil nuts, egg yolk, whole wheat, rye, oats, peanuts.
* Vitamin E: wheat germ oil, olive oil, sunflower seeds, almonds, peanuts.
* Vitamin A: dark green leafy veggies, liver, winter squash, cantaloupe, stone fruits, papaya, and cod liver oil.
* B vitamin complex: brewer’s yeast, wild rice, brown rice, whole wheat, beans, peanuts.
* Vitamin C: Red chili, guava, parsley, dark green leafy veggies, strawberries, papaya, citrus fruits.
* Support your adrenals. If this is the only thing you do, I promise it will benefit your health on many levels. Not only will supporting your adrenals lighten the burden on your thyroid, it will also help restore your energy levels and overall well-being.
* Start using a quality multivitamin–mineral. I encourage all my clients, especailly perimenopausal and menopausal, to take a pharmaceutical-grade supplement like our Essential Nutrients. Giving your body proper nutrition by supplementing your diet may be all you need to get yourself back on track.PLEASE NOTE: The FDA regulates supplements in the USA - they only check the health standards of the manufacturing company. The DO NOT check for quality and quantity of ingredient in the products. In other words, They often RIP YOU OFF AT THE COST OF YOUR HEALTH.
* Consider supplementing with selenium and iodine. Ask your practitioner to test your iodine levels in addition to your multivitamin. You can do this through the foods you eat or with selenium or iodine supplements.

Please work with a professional Naturopatic Doctor to monitor your levels appropriately. And when it comes to selenium supplements, I do not recommend taking more than 200 mcg/day.
* Reduce stress. Most Women give too much to those around us. Learn to say "No, I can not do that for you." and reduce YOUR Stress. Don’t feel guilty about asking for help yourself. You deserve a break — and so do the cells in your body!

Remember to have your Naturopath check your thyroid levels once a year, to stay on top of any changes. Prevention is easier than repairing your thyroid.

The FAT Syndrome

As an Online Weight Loss Coach I have found most people in Western culture are suffering from a condition called Metobolic Syndrome. There is no easy way to lose weight or maintain good health when you suffer from Metobolic Syndrome. This condition prevents the Insulin in your body from properly supporting the transfer of Glucose to the cells of your body beginning with the muscles. It isn't comfort eating that makes you fat.

The result is excess sugar in your blood stream that creates Out-Of-Control carb and sugar cravings and is readily converted to fat and stored. It's so much about how much food we were eating. It's how our bodies were reacting to our food choices. Yes! As your Online Weight Loss Coach I promise it is really that simple. You Can be Thin and Healthy without starvation dieting, cleanses, pre-packaged food, counting calories or points. Easy and Healthy! Good Health equals a Good Weight.

Stupid Reason to be FAT #8

As women reach menopause they experience a natural slowing of their metabolism. Estrogen favors weight gain in the lower body so with the loss of this hormone women can begin to accumulate fat around their middle. The hormonal changes also can bring on depression, cravings and poor sleep.

These are also the exact same symptoms of Metabolic Syndrome. So maybe menopause isn't the real problem. But it is a great time to really take charge of your health and explore a new and healthier lifestyle. A few simple and easy changes can bring tremendous relief from so many of our bodily complains: aching joints, exhaustion, mood swings and weight gain.

I have found an excellent product I use daily which has provided much relief from menopause fun. I have done extensive research from un-biased sources to choose what supplement brand I use. My choice is created from natural ingredients with no additives, chemicals or toxins. All the products have been tested and guaranteed to have exactly what the label claims in them. Always and only buy products that have a pharmaceutical guarantee. If you can't find any brand that holds these standards I suggest you save your money.

Stupid Reason to be FAT #5

Yet another thing to blame on our mothers. A higher percentage of kids who were bottle fed are FAT! Though there isn't anything you can do about it now - I hope- it is something to keep in mind when you have your own kids. Also, a new subject to discuss with your therapist.

Stupid Reason to be FAT #3:

You're stressed out.

When we are under stress our bodies go into a flight or fight response. This process slows down our metabolism which causes our bodies to store fuel (aka FAT). So take a few deep breaths and relax your way into a permanent healthy weight.

Loose Weight - Eat Almonds

Raw Almonds:

These yummy nuts are high in alpha-linolenic acid, which can accelerate your metabolism of fats. In fact, dieters who ate 3 ounces of almonds daily slashed their weight and body-mass index by 18 percent, while those who skipped the nuts reduced both numbers less— just 11 percent—a study in the International Journal of Obesity revealed. And I've always thought they were fattening.

Chomp almonds à la carte (limit yourself to 12 per serving to keep calories in check). I get a pack and nibble throughout my day. Or sprinkle them into cottage cheese or a salad Go nuts!

The Exercise Myth

I use to balance my food binges with exercise binges. 2 - 3 hours at the gym were a normal part of my day, as was a pint of ice cream and a box of cookies. Sick, Sick, Sick. Apparently I am not alone.

TIME MAGAZINE vol. 174, no. 6, August 17, 2009: http://www.time.com/time/

The Myth About Exercise "Of course it's good for you, but it won't make you loose weight.. Why it's what you eat that really counts."

This is an article worth reading if only it finally puts in writing what everybody has always known. Intense exercise makes you HUNGRY which often makes you over-eat. There are lots of great studies sited for proof. I suggest conducting you own. Go to gym you quit 6 months ago and look at everybody who have stuck it out. Do they look different?

So here it is - the final word. If you want to RELEASE WEIGHT - FOREVER. You have to change the way you EAT.

Is Diabetes a Choice?

Is getting big and fat making us sick? Is there a connection between the dramatic rise in both obesity and diabetes? In the U.S. and Canada, diabetes has increased more than 500% during just the last generation. More than seventy percent of adults and more than thirty percent of our children are considered to be either overweight or obese. In spite of spending more than 30 billion dollars each year on diets and weight loss programs, the rate of obesity has tripled in this country in the past thirty years. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has projected that one-third of our children born after the year 2000 will become diabetic. If you're Black or Hispanic, nearly fifty percent of your children will become diabetic. Diabetes is the leading cause of amputations, kidney failure, neuropathy, adult blindness, and cardiovascular disease.

And if that isn't enough, type 2 diabetes is now a global phenominum. The International Diabetes Federation has now predicted that the number of individuals with diabetes will increase from 240 million in 2007 to over 380 million in 2025. The greatest increase in type 2 diabetes is going to occur in Asia and primarily among the younger population. It doesn’t take much imagination to realize what the diabetes epidemic will do to the health of the world and to our financial health.

Are we doomed? Is there anything we can do to change these horrible projections? I want to bring focus to the health concept that developing type 2 diabetes is really a choice, even if you have a strong history of diabetes in your family. In over 90% of the population, no matter what their family history or genetic makeup, diabetes is preventable. Even if you already have prediabetes or diabetes, it can potentially be reversed. You need to understand that developing type 2 diabetes mellitus is really a CHOICE.

Choice as in: Do I eat fast food tonight? Do I walk up the stairs or do I ride? Do I drink water or soda? Do I eat every 2 - 3 hours?

I made the choice to change my life and you can too. It's simple and easy. The only hard part is making the choice to start.
