How to Stay Healthy with Kidney Stones - Womens Health

So many womans health is effected by kidney stones. Boy! do they hurt. We all want to learn how to stay healthy. In an effort to help you learn to stay healthy, especially with womens health, I copied this from "Ask the Scientist" at http://GetHealthyReleaseWeight.usana.com/

"Many studies have investigated the role of nutrition in helping to reduce kidney stones. A recent study conducted by Brigham and Womens' Hospital and Harvard Medical School found that previous recommendations to limit dairy products in an effort to reduce the risk of kidney stones were misguided. This study, conducted on more than 90,000 women showed that "women with the highest intake of dietary calcium had the lowest risk of kidney stones". This suggests that calcium may actually have a protective effects by binding to oxalate in the gut and preventing its absorption into a form that leads to kidney stones.

Another large scale study on calcium and kidney stones concluded that high calcium intake decreases the risk of symptomatic kidney stones. Perhaps, just as importantly, the study found that individuals consuming less than 850 mg of calcium per day actually had a higher incidence of kidney stones.

Wow! That sure will help us stay healthy! More calcium - less stones.

In general, the intake of calcium through food or supplements does not contribute to an increased incidence of kidney stones. In fact, with a very few exceptions, getting adequate dietary calcium actually reduces your risk for kidney stones."

Common sense says if you currently suffer from kidney stones and really want to have good health, we recommend consulting with a physician to determine the best course of action.

For men and womans health it is best to take calcium supplements with meals in order to effectively inhibit oxalate absorption."

Women - Menopause - Thyroid and Weight Gain

Menopause is a time of profound transition which is a nice way of saying Yipes! I'm getting old!

Menopause effects both the mind and body, particularly the thyroid and for those of you who don't know - Hypothyroidism makes you FAT!! In my opinion, the best way to restore healthy thyroid function is naturally through food and supplementation. My opinion comes from my personal expereince working with a wonderful women Naturopath - Dr. Laura Heib, Renton, Washington.

Nutrient-rich foods to replenish thyroid health

* Iodine (I): seaweed (e.g., nori), clams, shrimp, haddock, oysters, salmon, sardines, pineapple, eggs.
* Selenium (Se): smoked herring, smelt, wheat germ, Brazil nuts (just one nut provides ~139 mcg), apple cider vinegar, scallops, barley, lobster.
* Zinc (Zn): fresh oysters, ginger root, pecans, dry split peas, Brazil nuts, egg yolk, whole wheat, rye, oats, peanuts.
* Vitamin E: wheat germ oil, olive oil, sunflower seeds, almonds, peanuts.
* Vitamin A: dark green leafy veggies, liver, winter squash, cantaloupe, stone fruits, papaya, and cod liver oil.
* B vitamin complex: brewer’s yeast, wild rice, brown rice, whole wheat, beans, peanuts.
* Vitamin C: Red chili, guava, parsley, dark green leafy veggies, strawberries, papaya, citrus fruits.
* Support your adrenals. If this is the only thing you do, I promise it will benefit your health on many levels. Not only will supporting your adrenals lighten the burden on your thyroid, it will also help restore your energy levels and overall well-being.
* Start using a quality multivitamin–mineral. I encourage all my clients, especailly perimenopausal and menopausal, to take a pharmaceutical-grade supplement like our Essential Nutrients. Giving your body proper nutrition by supplementing your diet may be all you need to get yourself back on track.PLEASE NOTE: The FDA regulates supplements in the USA - they only check the health standards of the manufacturing company. The DO NOT check for quality and quantity of ingredient in the products. In other words, They often RIP YOU OFF AT THE COST OF YOUR HEALTH.
* Consider supplementing with selenium and iodine. Ask your practitioner to test your iodine levels in addition to your multivitamin. You can do this through the foods you eat or with selenium or iodine supplements.

Please work with a professional Naturopatic Doctor to monitor your levels appropriately. And when it comes to selenium supplements, I do not recommend taking more than 200 mcg/day.
* Reduce stress. Most Women give too much to those around us. Learn to say "No, I can not do that for you." and reduce YOUR Stress. Don’t feel guilty about asking for help yourself. You deserve a break — and so do the cells in your body!

Remember to have your Naturopath check your thyroid levels once a year, to stay on top of any changes. Prevention is easier than repairing your thyroid.

New Technology Means Less Suppliments for the Same Bang

I don't understand the technology but I love the idea of taking less pills each day. Remember - always choose Pharmacological Grade Supplements. Get what your paying for.

Usanais proud to be a leader in the evolution of nutrition technology,” said Dr. Tim Wood, USANA Executive Vice President of Research and Development.

UsanaNutritional Hybrid Technology illustrates our commitment to innovative manufacturing practices and production of high-quality nutritional products.”

Through Nutritional Hybrid Technology, Usana can now combine two distinct formulas into one bilayered tablet, allowing for advanced ingredient combinations while providing product stability. The technology will also help consumers simplify their nutritional regimen by decreasing the number of tablets they take each day.

Two new Usanaformulas, Proflavanol® C100 and Hepasil DTX™, were created with the new manufacturing technology and also unveiled at the company’s convention.

Proflavanol C100 combines powerful proanthocyanidins from grape-seed extract with high-potency vitamin C to promote sound cardiovascular health, immune function, and healthy-looking skin. An in-house Usanastudy found that the combination of grape-seed extract and vitamin C in Proflavanol C100 provides long-term antioxidant activity and better protective effects than if they were not combined.

Usanaupgraded Hepasil DTX formula contains a proprietary blend of ingredients to maintain optimum liver support and aid in the body’s detoxification processes.

Nutritional Hybrid Technology allows USANA Usanato boost key ingredients in the supplement while maintaining product quality and stability

This is NOT Good Food

This was copied from the Center for Science in the Public Interest

ACESULFAME-K

Artificial sweetener: Baked goods, chewing gum, gelatin desserts, diet soda, Sunette.

This artificial sweetener, manufactured by Hoechst, a giant German chemical company, is widely used around the world. It is about 200 times sweeter than sugar. In the United States, for several years acesulfame-K (the K is the chemical symbol for potassium) was permitted only in such foods as sugar-free baked goods, chewing gum, and gelatin desserts. In July 1998, the FDA allowed this chemical to be used in soft drinks, thereby greatly increasing consumer exposure. It is often used together with sucralose (see SUCRALOSE).

The safety tests of acesulfame-K were conducted in the 1970s and were of mediocre quality. Key rat tests were afflicted by disease in the animal colonies; a mouse study was several months too brief and did not expose animals during gestation. Two rat studies suggest that the additive might cause cancer. It was for those reasons that in 1996 the Center for Science in the Public Interest urged the FDA to require better testing before permitting acesulfame-K in soft drinks. In addition, large doses of acetoacetamide, a breakdown product, have been shown to affect the thyroid in rats, rabbits, and dogs. Hopefully, the small amounts in food are not harmful.

Staying Strong and Healthy at 50 and Beyond:

My life's desire is to stay strong, healthy and fit at fifty. And now that I am 50 years old I am focusing a little bit harder on my health.

Some Good Info

You can slow down your aging process and help stave off heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. U.S. News & World Report offers some tips on how to do it:

1. Free radicals. Free radicals are chemically unstable molecules that attack your cells and damage your DNA. You can limit your exposure to them by avoiding cigarettes, trans fats, charred meats, and other sources.

Organic fruits and vegetables will also limit your exposure to pesticides and herbicides, which contain the harmful molecules.

2. Inflammation. Inflammation is a major player in many diseases of aging, including cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and Alzheimer's. One way to avoid it is to follow a Mediterranean-style diet.

Other great anti-inflammatory foods include turmeric, dark chocolate, and the anti-aging chemical resveratrol. Exercise is another great way to lower inflammation.

3. Glycation. Glycation is what happens when sugar mixes with proteins and fats to form molecules that promote aging. Advanced glycation end products, or AGEs, are thought to accelerate your aging process by churning out free radicals and promoting inflammation. One way to avoid ingesting AGEs is to turn down the heat when you cook. The browning effect of high-heat cooking causes these molecules to form. Limiting your intake of sugar-filled foods in general will also help.

4. Stress. Stress initiates the release of a variety of hormones that make your pulse race and cause your blood pressure to rise. The hormone cortisol, released to lessen these effects, also creates problems when it remains chronically elevated. Try practicing relaxation techniques to help manage stress, and get enough sleep every night.

So You Want to be Fit at Fifty?

So you want to be fit at 50?

By 50 years old we have done so much to our bodies. We need to start by learning how to protect ourselves if we want to be strong, healthy and fit at fifty. No matter what your age I promise you will have more energy, be stronger, less headaches..... if you avoid the following toxins.

Carcinogens cause genetic alternations that lead to cancerous tumors and promote the growth of cancer cells.

Immunotoxic Chemicals damage or interfere with your bodies immune system

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's found in many household products such as cleansers, aerosol sprays, dry cleaned clothing, paint, gasoline. All are toxic to both the nervous and immune systems. They have also been linked to brain tumors and leukemia in children.

Phthalates are used to make countless household items: toys, shower curtains, nail polish, wall paper. These chemicals have been linked to birth defects, miscarriages, cancer, heart and lung problems.

A 2002 EPA study showed at least 2/3 of Americans live in areas where toxic chemicals in the air raise the risk of cancer.

So vigilance is the first step in being fit at 50 or any age for that matter. I have made alot of changes over the last few years and my fitness at fifty is better than ever. Good enough to keep up with my four kids (3 of which are under 10 years old)

What's the Connection between Disease and Inflamation?

Inflammation is the bodies way to protect itself for diseases. Working correctly it is one of our bodies natural and best defenses. But like so many other things affected by out modern lifestyles. The inflammatory response is messed up too. Rather than protecting us from disease there are many indications inflammation causes or encourages their spread.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a perfect example of the body perceiving an injury where none exists and launches a sustained attack on cartilage and healthy cells. High levels of inflammation are associated with diabetics and heart problems. And while inflammation doesn't cause cancer. Cancer does need inflammation to grow and spread.

Fat, because it leads to chemical changes in the liver is a primary cause of inflammation. All the foods that lead to Insulin Resistance raise inflammation levels.

So once again, the same song I keep on singing. We have to get back to basics. You need a program that includes eating good food every 2 1/2- 3 hours, drinking 80oz. of pure clean water, getting proper cellular nutrition, eating 6 super foods a day and getting moderate exercise. It is not natural for our bodies to swim in inflammation. We do not have to live with degenertive disease. It's simple to be healthy but most people find it hard to do. Most of us need help. What we can't do alone we can do together. Reach out - there are lots of hands waiting.

Comfort Food and Cancer

Comfort Food Linked to Heart Disease and Cancer??

Does it ever end???

You would think they have better things to do than check the chemicals of pizza (or and high-carb food) heated past 250" but it seems they don't. News from the labs is it creates harmful chemicals that have been linked to an increased risk of cancer and heart disease. So what to do? How can I still enjoy comfort food like pizza?

Antioxidents in one tablespoon of fresh rosemary added to the dough can slash the chemicals by 60%.

Mom always said eating the "green stuff" was good for you. Now it can help me eat comfort food. Yeah!

Chocolate; More than a Comfort Food.

Chocolate Delight

Not only does it do a great job with the morning after alcohol jitters but a few squares of dark chocolate can lower your blood pressure in as little as two hours. Have two ounces of chocolate made of at least 60% cocoa for desert or first thing the morning after.

I told you. Chocolate is the ultimate comfort food.

Can You Be Healthy and Eat Butter?

The Skinny on Butter

Growing up it was not rare for me to eat a spoonful of butter, spread butter on saltine crackers for a snack or eat a butter and white bread sandwich. My mom would buy the “tub butter” because it was “healthier” than the “real butter” our grandparents used. Little did she know, or other baby boomers at the time, that the plasticized margarine was full of hydrogenated oils called “trans fats” which are now labeled the most dangerous fats, not only elevating our bad cholesterol, but decreasing our good cholesterol.
What’s the real story on butter?

Butter has been around for thousands of years. The Bible has references to butter as the products of milk from the cow. People all over the world have been using butter and praising it for its amazing health benefits. How did butter become a villain in the quest for good health?

At the turn of the century (when there was no margarine and LIMITED PROCESSED FOODS), heart disease was rare in America. By 1960, it was our number one killer. Ironically, our consumption of butter decreased from eighteen pounds per person per year, to four but our consumption of processed foods has skyrocketed. A researcher named Ancel Keys was the first to propose that saturated fat and cholesterol in the diet (both of which are in butter and other animal products) were to blame for coronary heart disease (CAD). It’s weird that these types of foods have been a main staple for centuries … unlike Twinkies, Cheetos and Diet Sodas that are now our main staples.

The belief was built (on little concrete research) that fat is bad. Fat makes you fat. Eat fat and it turns into fat. Fat is the culprit behind obesity, heart disease and diabetes. The market became bombarded with low-fat/no-fat processed foods that made us feel we were safe from the side effects of fat on our health and waist line. We increased the consumption of these processed foods, most of which contained partially hydrogenated oils (Trans fats) as well as being completely devoid of the nutrition our body needs to protect against disease. Could the correlation of disease be due to the movement away from whole foods which protect our health to convenient processed foods that simply fill us with empty calories?

As I began learningThe Healthy Edge lifestyle, more and more research led me to challenge the belief system I had around fat. I had been conditioned for years that a healthy diet is one of minimal fat, particularly saturated fat from animal products.

After looking into the research, it is widely accepted and proven that a variety of healthy dietary fats work to supply your body with essential fatty acids for longevity, hormone balance, heart health, sharp vision, glowing moist skin and energy. It’s ironic that when I was eating to avoid fat I suffered from adult acne, depression, mood swings and a lack of energy. Coincidence? I think not.

Margarine or Butter?

It is a tragic myth that Margarine and other processed butter products are better than butter. Butter is a completely natural food that can be very beneficial to your health-especially when you eat raw and organic butter.

Margarines and similar hydrogenated or processed polyunsaturated oils are created chemically. The process used to make these normally liquid oils into spreadable form is called hydrogenation. There are non-hydrogenated margarines that claim to contain no Trans fats but have added “modified” (what does that mean?) palm and palm kernel oil to increase its spread ability.

Below are some of the amazing benefits of raw, organic butter:

1) It is rich in the most easily absorbable form of Vitamin A necessary for thyroid and adrenal health.

2) Contains lauric acid, important in treating fungal infections and Candida.

3) Contains lecithin, essential for cholesterol metabolism.

4) Contains antioxidants that protect against free radical damage.

5) Have antioxidants that protect against weakening arteries.

6) Great source of Vitamins E and K.

7) Saturated fats in butter had strong anti-tumor and anti-cancer properties.

8) Contains conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which is a potent anti-cancer agent, muscle builder, immunity booster and inhibits the body’s mechanism for storing body fat. It actually causes the body to utilize fatty reserves for energy!

9) May promote fertility in women.

10) Protects against gastrointestinal infections in the very young or the elderly.

These are just ten benefits of butter. There are many more. The best butter to eat is raw, organic butter because pasteurization destroys nutrients. Unfortunately, the sale of raw butter is prohibited in most states in the US. You can make your own or please buy butter from grass-fed animals only. What animals are fed has a strong correlation to what nutrients are in the milk and therefore what nutrients will be in the butter that is produced. For example, cows fed processed grains or dry hay will not have conjugated linoleic acids (CLA’s) in their milk.

How much is too much?

Just because there are health benefits to butter doesn’t mean that quantity doesn’t matter. Butter is a condiment, not a main course. Butter can accentuate food, but it’s not the focus of the food. You also want to be aware of what you are eating the butter WITH. Are you eating it with a huge processed muffin full of sugar, enriched flours and artificial preservatives? Are you eating a half of stick with a loaf of bread brought to your table at an Italian restaurant? Are you using two sticks of butter in grandma’s chocolate cookies that you decide to consume over the course of a day or two? That’s NOT what we are talking about! Butter is often associated with comfort foods that are detrimental to our health or foods that should be consumed in moderation (perhaps holidays or special occasions). But butter can also add flavor to a variety of vegetables such as corn, squash, red potatoes and green beans. Butter also adds flavor to oatmeal and sprouted whole grain breads. Use reasonable amounts and pay attention to serving sizes! The healthier your body is, the less you will notice you need to add additional flavor to your food.

The quality of the product makes a big difference as well, since the higher the quality, the better it will be for you. Remember, butter is one form of healthy fats that can be added to your lifestyle. There are also a variety of plant oils that can be used for cooking such as olive, grapeseed, almond and sunflower oil. The Healthy Edge Cookbook can support you in recipes that use these healthy oils.

We have entered a time where we have been given permission to be less rigid about eliminating fats or carbs from our lifestyle. Balance is the key. In addition to balance, we can choose whole foods that keep our bodies free of additives, preservatives and other chemicals that are detrimental to our health. The Healthy Edge supports families in transitioning to this type of lifestyle by explaining the how’s and why’s in a fun, empowering and interactive way. Learn how to be proactive in your health without sacrificing taste, time or money! Make a shift that can change your future and the future of your family.

Fish Oil Supplements Reduce Breast Cancer

There are several different classifications of breast cancer. New research adds strong support to the use of fish oil supplements in reducing the most common classification, known as invasive ductal carcinoma.

CAUTION Most of the Fish Oil Supplements you can buy in retail stores is RANCID aka ROTTEN. I suggest always getting oil that has been refrigerated and comes in darkened bottles. The supplements will stay fresh much longer if treated with care. Be mindful of the high levels of Mercury in many fish also. It is very hard to get good quality supplements in the USA do to lack of regulation.

A recent study conducted by experts at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington, included 35,016 postmenopausal women between the ages of 50 and 76. Participants were members of the VITamins And Lifestyle (VITAL) study group. Subjects completed a 24-page baseline questionnaire that asked about recent (current versus past) supplement use. Frequency and duration of supplementation were also recorded. The women were asked specifically about the use of supplements other than basic vitamins and minerals.

We are really lucky to have the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle though I hope none of us ever need it.

After six years of follow-up, researchers found that regular use of fish oil supplements was associated with a 32 percent reduction in breast cancer risk. The reduced risk was limited to the most common form of breast cancer (the aforementioned invasive ductal carcinoma), which represents nearly 80% of diagnosed breast cancer cases. The highest level of benefit was also determined to be in women who were current users of fish oil.

Fish oil is a rich source of EPA (eicosapentoaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), two omega-3 fatty acids that have been studied extensively for prevention and treatment of various health conditions, including heart disease, arthritis and inflammatory conditions, macular degeneration, and depression. The results from this study give strong support to the possibility that regular fish oil consumption may also be associated with a reduced risk of the most common form of breast cancer.

Health Threats from Cell Phones????

San Francisco has voted to require all retailers to display the amount of radiation cell phones emit. The law is the first of its kind in the U.S.

The administration of mayor Gavin Newsom called the vote a major victory for cell phone shoppers' right to know.

According to the New York Times:
This is out of line of my typical nutrition info but since every person I have ever met has a cell phone I thought this was worth sharing.

New Law in San Fransico

"Under the law, retailers will be required to post materials -- in at least 11-point type -- next to phones, listing their specific absorption rate, which is the amount of radio waves absorbed into the cell phone user's body tissue.

These so-called SAR rates can vary from phone to phone, but all phones sold in the United States must have a SAR rate no greater than 1.6 watts per kilogram".

Vitamin B and Depression

Low intakes of the B vitamins are thought to contribute to depression in some people, but until now there has been little supporting evidence from population-based studies of older adults.

In a recent study published online in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers examined whether certain dietary intakes of vitamin B6, vitamin B12, and folic acid correlated with symptoms of depression.

The study group consisted of 3,503 adults aged 65 and older who were followed over an average of 7.2 years. Vitamin intakes from diet and supplements were assessed using food frequency questionnaires, and the presence of depression was measured periodically using a standardized version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale.

After ≤12 years of follow-up, higher B vitamin intakes (including supplementation) were associated with a lower risk of depressive symptoms. The lowered risk remained after adjusting for age, sex, race, education, income, and anti-depressant medication use. The risk of developing depression symptoms decreased by 2 percent for every 10mg (milligram) increase in daily vitamin B6 intake. The same effect was true for every 10µg (microgram) increase in vitamin B12 intake. Increased intakes of the B vitamins through food intake alone did not significantly reduce depression incidence.

Both vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 are involved in healthy nervous system function, but because older adults often have difficulty absorbing the B12 found naturally in food, fortified foods and a multivitamin may be necessary to reach beneficial levels.

The results of this research indicate that high total intakes of vitamins B6 and B12 may be protective against depressive symptoms in older adults. Be sure to always get Pharmaceutical Grade Supplements

New Research on Preventing Retinitis Degeneration

New research supports the use of 12 mg of lutein each day to slow visual field loss in adults with retinitis pigmentosa, a genetic eye condition.

The right supplement at the right time.

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a common form of retinal degeneration. This disorder causes a progressive loss of photoreceptor cells in the eye and can eventually lead to blindness. Daily intake of 15,000 IU of vitamin A palmitate is known to reduce the progression of the disease and can sometimes postpone blindness for many years.

In newly published research, scientists sought to determine whether supplementation with lutein – a nutrient found in yellow/orange and dark green leafy vegetables – could slow visual decline in patients with RP who were already receiving vitamin A.

A randomized, controlled, double-blinded trial of 225 nonsmoking patients (ages 18 to 60) took place over 4 years. Each day, patients consumed a tablet of 12 mg of lutein or placebo. All participants were given 15,000 IU/day of vitamin A palmitate.

Over the course of the study, a decrease in visual sensitivity loss was seen in the lutein+vitamin A group. The average decline was smallest in the individuals with the highest serum lutein levels.

In this group of participants, lutein supplementation of 12 mg/day was effective at slowing visual sensitivity loss, and could therefore delay or prevent the occurrence of blindness even better than treatment with vitamin A alone.

Preventing Heart Disease with Zinc

Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress are important risk factors for heart disease. My first and most powerful suggestion as an Online Weight Loss coach to my clients to reduce chronic inflammation is cut out processed food and refined sugar. Adding Pharmacultical Quality Supplementation is my second and equally important suggestion.

Zinc is an essential mineral with both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant functions. Because of these properties, zinc may play a role in protecting the heart.

To examine the effect of zinc on markers of inflammation, researchers conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of zinc supplementation in elderly subjects. Forty healthy elderly subjects (aged 56-83 years) were randomly assigned to 2 groups. One group received placebo; the other received 45 mg of zinc per day for 6 months.

Compared to the placebo, six months of zinc supplementation increased plasma zinc concentrations and decreased several markers associated with inflammation. Higher zinc levels were also related to a decrease in markers associated with oxidative stress.

The findings of this research suggest that zinc may have a protective effect in coronary artery disease thanks to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Chicken Finger reciepe - Kids love it.

This is listed as an appitizor on the HealthyEdge Web site but I made it as part of a meal. It was really easy, fast and all my family ate it. I have put Jan's Tips inside the " " marks.

Chicken Fingers

2 skinless, boneless organic chicken breasts
Olive oil (as needed)
1/2 cup whole grain bread crumbs "I put Kashi Nuggest brand cereal in my blender with some roasted wassabi edamame to make the bread crumbs. If you use store bought crumbs watch for preservatives, additives and other toxins"
1/2 tsp sea salt
1/4 tsp cracked black pepper
3 tbsp honey
2 tbsp Dijon mustard
1/4 cup olive oil
2 tbsp raspberry preserves (naturally sweetened)

# Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
# Cut the chicken breasts into 4 or 5 pieces (lengthwise).
# To create more pieces, cut into smaller sections. "or buy more chicken" Place pieces in a bowl. Add enough olive oil to cover pieces and stir to coat pieces evenly. "I added the honey to the olive oil as a coating. I think the honey made it coat the chicken better than olive oil alone. I put them together in a big baggie and put the chicken pieces in too. The honey and oil mixed up real nice without any messy bowl"
# In a plastic zip lock bag, mix whole grain bread crumbs, sea salt, and black pepper. Add chicken strips, 3 or 4 at a time, and shake to coat pieces with bread crumbs.
# Arrange the chicken strips on a non-stick or lightly oiled (olive oil spray) baking sheet. Bake 10 minutes, turn strips over and continue baking 5 to 10 minutes, until browned.
# In a small bowl, combine the honey, Dijon mustard, raspberry preserves and cup olive oil. Season with sea salt and cracked black pepper. Serve as a dip for the baked chicken fingers. "The finger strips are so good I didn't bother making the dip and every last piece of chicken was gone"

How Food Can Make Kid Nuts

So many kids aren't learning, acting out and just plain out of control. Maybe it's what they're eating. Great article with some good suggestions.

Certainly worth a look

Day Two - Eating with the Family

The experiment of cooking and eating a sit down meal for 14 days in a row is going to be more interesting and challenging that I expected.

Day 2: Vegi Burrito's: black and pinto beans (canned with low sodium), corn, green onions (diced) green peppers (diced)- heated together. I add in Jot brand enchilada mix (anything with no preservatives, food coloring ect is fine), a little water. Scoop enough into 100% whole wheat tortilla's (Trader Joe Brand is my choice) - a little sauce or oil on the bottom of a pan, bake at 350' for 20- 30 minutes with foil covering. I mixed shredded green organic cabbage and torn cilantro into what I call Cilantro Slaw. A little salsa and I had a meal.

So for two days I got the cooking part right. But still working on the whole family eating at the same time. Track practice from 6 - 7pm so the kids and I could eat at 7:30pm but my husband had a meeting at 7pm till 9pm. hmmmm.... too many activities.

Day One of Eating with the Family

The first meal and I can see this will be trickier than I imagined. The food is assembled: turkey burgers, un-sproated wheat buns, green salad with black bean, corn and tomato tossed in. It seems to be going so smoothly. The kids have actually agreed to eat the food.

Then the phone rings with a crisis on the other end. So today I learned my first lesson:

Eating Dinner Together Rule #1: Never answer the phone within 10 minutes of the meal time.

The FAT Syndrome

As an Online Weight Loss Coach I have found most people in Western culture are suffering from a condition called Metobolic Syndrome. There is no easy way to lose weight or maintain good health when you suffer from Metobolic Syndrome. This condition prevents the Insulin in your body from properly supporting the transfer of Glucose to the cells of your body beginning with the muscles. It isn't comfort eating that makes you fat.

The result is excess sugar in your blood stream that creates Out-Of-Control carb and sugar cravings and is readily converted to fat and stored. It's so much about how much food we were eating. It's how our bodies were reacting to our food choices. Yes! As your Online Weight Loss Coach I promise it is really that simple. You Can be Thin and Healthy without starvation dieting, cleanses, pre-packaged food, counting calories or points. Easy and Healthy! Good Health equals a Good Weight.

Sugar Trivia from your On-line Weight Loss Coach

Hey - Sweet-tooth, this is your On-line Weight Loss Coach talking to you.

Have you ever sat down for a snack of 16 sugar cubes? Yucky, that sounds gross. But if you drink cola you have just a wee bit less with ever 20 ounce bottle you chug down.

Fighting wrinkles with face cream? Try giving up sugar. There is a process called glycation, which excess blood sugar (can you say Insulin Resistance) binds to collagen in the skin making it less elastic.

How far can you carry 61 pounds? That is how much sugar the average American eats in a year. 25 pounds of which is candy. During Halloween season we eat at least 2 pounds, each. No wonder we gain so much weight over the holidays.

Stupid Reason to be FAT #8

As women reach menopause they experience a natural slowing of their metabolism. Estrogen favors weight gain in the lower body so with the loss of this hormone women can begin to accumulate fat around their middle. The hormonal changes also can bring on depression, cravings and poor sleep.

These are also the exact same symptoms of Metabolic Syndrome. So maybe menopause isn't the real problem. But it is a great time to really take charge of your health and explore a new and healthier lifestyle. A few simple and easy changes can bring tremendous relief from so many of our bodily complains: aching joints, exhaustion, mood swings and weight gain.

I have found an excellent product I use daily which has provided much relief from menopause fun. I have done extensive research from un-biased sources to choose what supplement brand I use. My choice is created from natural ingredients with no additives, chemicals or toxins. All the products have been tested and guaranteed to have exactly what the label claims in them. Always and only buy products that have a pharmaceutical guarantee. If you can't find any brand that holds these standards I suggest you save your money.

You're ingesting Obesogens, chemicals that alter you hormones and cause you to gain and hold onto weight. Where do these nasty things come from? Plastic, can linings, baby teething toys, non stick pans, stain-resistant clothing, carpets, fragrances, pesticides and other surprising spots.

Scary isn't it. What can you do???

Stupid Reason to be FAT #5

Yet another thing to blame on our mothers. A higher percentage of kids who were bottle fed are FAT! Though there isn't anything you can do about it now - I hope- it is something to keep in mind when you have your own kids. Also, a new subject to discuss with your therapist.

Body Maintenance 101

It Sounds gross but cracking your knuckles does not actually hurt your bones or cause arthritis. The sound you hear is just gas bubbles bursting. Cracking your knuckles (or any of your joints) can have therapeutic benefits. When you crack one of your joints you are pulling the bones that are connected at the joint apart from each other. This process stimulates your tendons, relaxes your muscles, and loosens your joints.Chiropractors get paid alot to do this for spinal joints when your back is sore and stiff, but you can do this on your own for your knuckles, toes, knees, neck, etc.

Unfortunately, there can be too much of a good thing. Cracking your knuckles will never lead to arthritis (despite what your mom keeps telling you), but scientists have discovered that it can cause tissue damage in the affected joints. Knuckle-cracking pulls your finger bones apart which stretches your ligaments. Too much stretching of your ligaments will cause damage to your fingers akin to the arm injuries sustained by a baseball pitcher who throws too many pitches. In addition to making your hand really sore, this ligament damage can also result in reduced grip strength.

How does this work? Your joints, the places in your body where you can bend, are where your bones intersect and are held together by ligaments. These joints are surrounded by a liquid called synovial fluid. When you stretch your ligaments by pulling the bones apart to crack your knuckles a gas in the synovial fluid escapes and turns into a bubble. This process is called cavitation. Cavitation ends when the bubble eventually bursts, producing that popping sound we know and love. After that, your joints won't be able to crack for another 25-30 minutes while the gas gets reabsorbed into the synovial fluid.

Stupid Reason to be FAT #3:

You're stressed out.

When we are under stress our bodies go into a flight or fight response. This process slows down our metabolism which causes our bodies to store fuel (aka FAT). So take a few deep breaths and relax your way into a permanent healthy weight.

Heart Disease in 10 Year Old Kids

Nothing is more precious than my beautiful daughters. I would willingly trade my life to save them. What parent doesn’t feel the same? Yet we are killing them, unknowingly, but killing them just the same. This generation is the first predicated NOT to live as long as their parents. Who would think of heart disease starting at 10 years old?
Studies are now showing us that children age 10 to 18 have evidence of early "hardening of the arteries" or cardiovascular disease. There is increasing evidence that many of children already have thickening of their arteries and that their arteries are already less pliable. This has been documented via ultrasounds of their arteries. This is primarily due to the insulin resistance they are developing so early in life.* Dr. Strand.
If insulin resistance is creating the beginning of heart disease in kids imagine what it is doing to the rest of us. Breaking insulin resistance is the first step. Not only will this FREE YOU FROM CRAVINGS but truly set you on the road to good health. Your heart, energy level, moods: there are a lot more to measure your health than a number on a scale. Following a program based on sound nutrition and moderate exercise will not only change the way you look but change the way you feel.

Slim Down the Fattening Fast Food

Don’t Let the Drive-Thru Detour Your Summer Slimdown Goal

“You may not be able to avoid fast food restaurants altogether. But remember, it’s up to you to choose what you eat when you’re there. No one is forcing you to eat those fries! You can stick to your health and weight goals—just make the smart choices. Even small changes like ordering the smaller size or getting water instead of soda can make a difference.”
—Kathy Kaehler, celebrity trainer and USANA spokesperson

In today's world, where time is precious and convenience is essential, the fast food meal is all too rapidly becoming the norm. As you strive to improve your eating habits and slim down for summer, it would be great if you could never set foot in another fast food restaurant. But that's unlikely, so make sure to choose healthier options when you do go.

* Skip the cheese, the mayo, and the bacon.
* Order sauces and salad dressings (get the light ones) on the side.
* Opt for smarter choices like grilled chicken, fish, or even a small hamburger. By picking foods from the lighter menu, you can cut fat intake by half.
* Order the smallest size to take the edge off until you can eat something healthier, and never “super-size” your meal.
* Get the smarter sides. Many fast food restaurants today make it easy to substitute a salad or fruit in place of fries. A scary fact: research shows that fries are the most frequently eaten vegetable, both inside and outside the home, and unfortunately they are loaded with the unhealthiest of saturated fats.
* Eat whole foods when possible—whole grains, veggies, fruit, lean meats, or baked potatoes. Less-processed foods contain less sugar and less fat. They also have more fiber, which fills you up so your cravings are controlled.
* Go for the thin or whole-wheat crust for the pizza and load up the veggies.

Get out of the fast food lane
The best fast food is no fast food! Simply by planning ahead and being prepared, you can make it past the gleaming neon lights of fast food row without the temptation next time.

* Plan your meals ahead of time. Set aside time every Sunday to plan your meals for the week. Schedule a meal or snack every three to four hours during the day so you don’t get overly hungry and grab a high-calorie diet buster.
* Shop smart. Bring a list to the store and stick to it. You should primarily be choosing the less processed foods that are usually found around the perimeter, such as fruit, vegetables, and lean protein.
* Make your own food. Prepare as much as you can ahead of time. Keep cut vegetables and fruit easily accessible. Pre-package portion controlled snacks.
* Stock your desk, car, or anywhere else you frequently find yourself away from home with Nutrition Bars or Nutrimeal™ and Fibergy® shake mixes, so when hunger strikes, you will be prepared.

Microwave Ovens: Another Slow Death

It seems like if it isn't one convenience killing us it's another. A dear friend described the numerous horrors of microwaving food over dinner last Friday. (I'm glad she never knew I re-heated it in the micro-wave) The following are just a few dangers I found floating out there.
1) Microwaving destroys vitamins five times more quickly than does regular cooking. Researchers found that after just six minutes of microwaving, nearly half of the vitamin B12 in food was destroyed. Vitamin B12 was singled out for study since it is of vital importance in preventing several chronic major diseases.

2) A study published in the November 2003 issue of The Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture found that broccoli 'zapped' in the microwave with a little water lost up to 97 per cent of the beneficial antioxidant chemicals it contains. By comparison, steamed broccoli lost 11 per cent or less of its antioxidants.

3) Plants watered with water that had been boiled in the microwave died - The information wasn't clear if this was because the boiling water was poured on them.

So I challenge everybody to STOP using their microwaves for 1 week. I've gone since last Friday and only zapped once. Unfortunately it was my kids mac and cheese I zapped.

Good Food to Lose Weight

It is so simple yet how many people really combine a Protein and Low Glycemic Carbohydrate at each snack or meal? The combo is the best way to tell your metabolism to burn baby burn.

The very best choice, in my not so humble opinion, are plant proteins since they satisfy both protein and good carb in one bite. Black beans, split pea, lentils, chick peas, brown rice, broccoli, nuts, muesli & quinoa are a few suggestions.

Most people think of meat, chicken, really anything that breaths, as the best protein sources. And they do have alot of protein per serving for the most part they also have added hormones, mercury and preservatives. And consider what your really eating, dead flesh. I suppose dead is preferable to living flesh but both are pretty disgusting.

Try substituting a meal or snack using only plant protein once a day. It will kick up your fat burner and be much easier on your digestive system.

The Hamburger that Won't Die

I think of the hamburger that wouldn't die each time I drive by fast food row. As a Group and Online Weight Loss coach I suggest you drive by too. The effects of fast food on your physical and emotional healthy are staggering. These are not foods that help you lose weight.

I have been storing a McDonald’s Happy Meal (no ketchup or pickles) in my pantry since November 2009. It is a little bit harder and slightly smaller than the day I bought it but aside from those small changes it is exactly the same. There is absolutely no mold growing on either the burger or fries. It doesn't even smell. So how do you think that effects your body?

Good Food equals Good Health and Permanent Weight Loss

Mustard works wonders on a hot dog but it might be a weight loss wonder too. A wonder given to us by nature is always a better choice than something full of chemicals and additives.

Turmeric, the spice that gives mustard its color, may slow the growth of fat tissues, a study in the journal Endocrinology finds. Tumeric is also an anti-inflamatory food and there are strong indications that inflamation is at the root of many degenerative diseases. I have been using it for arthritus and it seems to help. At the very least I know it isn't hurting me. The worst that could come from too much turmeric is I will turn yellow.

So spice it up and smear it on. Mustard is low in calories- high in flavor. Mix it into tuna instead of mayo. Blend the spicy style with Bragg (soy sauce substitiute) for a healthy flavorful marinade.

Excercise for Permanent Weight Loss

Exercise has turned into a dirty word. It brings to mind sore muscles, sweat and boring hours on a tred-mill. And that is one way to do it but look at kids playing, they know how to exercise.

It takes too much time is a common complaint. And based on the false information we have been told for years that does seem true. Current medical studies show breaking up your 30 minutes a day into 10 minute segments is an excellent contribution to your health. For those of you working to achieve a healthy, permanent weight loss this is enough. re through out the Those of you working for fitness need to follow a different path. Everybody has 10 minutes here and theday. As a coach I suggest my clients schedule in their 10 minute segments until they become a habit. Sure, this takes some effort but once established a habit is easy and almost thoughtless to maintain.

For those of you working to achieve a permanent, healthy weight segmenting your exercise is the way to go. If you are hoping to achieve a higher fitness level you will need to spend more time and effort into your exercise routine. Keep first things first. Go for better health first. You can always increasing your goal to fitness later.

Good Food for Permanent Weight Loss

If you were my kids you would have eaten a pancake for breakfast but not YOUR mother’s pancakes. I combine Arrowhead Mills Organic (Fred Myer health food section) Buckwheat and Multigrain packages, a little Bob’s Red Mill organic golden ground Flaxseed Meal (Fred Myer health food section), one egg per kid and enough milk to make it smooth. I use organic butter to coat the pan. I wipe it out between cooking cakes since burnt butter tastes like, well, burnt butter. I never put anything fake on the cake. I de-frost organic blueberry’s, organic strawberry’s or use pure Maple Syrup to cover them. When choosing a syrup make it pure and 100% since it is the processing of sugar that raises the glycemic load and destroys the flavor. (Thus the industry’s Food Doctors but that is another article)
Do I do all this every morning? Absolutely NOT! Lots of mornings they get toast: Ezekiel bread (Fred Myer health food section) toast. I use Earth Balance Buttery Spread, (Fred Myer health food section) , Hummus Dip (Trader Joe’s), almond or soy nut butter, Adam’s un-blended peanut butter (Fred Myer regular isle) . I have found any nut butter that is blended has oil added to it: Sometimes good but sometimes bad. For me the simplest thing is to stir it up myself. (Fred Myer and Winco) have grinding machines for completely fresh nut butter. When you grind it up yourself it also stays blended. (Winco) also has fresh honey you can pour right out of a box with the bee’s still buzzing in it.
I make steel cut oatmeal too. (Fred Myer, Trader Joes) Since it takes a long time to cook I make a bunch at once and keep it in the fridge. It is easy enough to scoop some out, pour in some organic milk and heat it on the stove. I have seen recipes to cook it in a crock pot overnight with dried berries and cinnamon. Exploring the internet will give you lots of different recipes.
Since my kids are young and never agree on what tastes good I buy the pre-packaged flavored oatmeal (Trader Joe’s brand), add a lot of milk and blend it with the steel cut oats. I rationalize (*See http://gethealthyreleaseweight.blogspot.com/ on my article about rationalization and why you need a Weight Loss Coach for Permanent Weight Loss) I think the combination slows the sugar spike which is the beginning of Insulin Resistance. It has taken some time to move my whole family to a new way of eating. By changing familiar foods to low glycemic and whole foods the transition has been easier. I believe in progress not perfection.
So what do the grown-ups eat for breakfast? Usana Meal- Replacement Shakes – I blend mine with water and use it as creamer for my coffee. My husband uses a blender with ice, water and some sort of berry. Frozen berries and banana’s can be substituted for ice.
I know some people look for other shake brands. During my body builder phase I used every protein drink I could buy and I can assure you – They all taste awful. Usana shakes taste good and have a normal serving of protein, carbs and fat which is something I also never found in store bought shakes. They also have no GMO soy added. I really try to avoid GMO food since the concept of genetically modifying food is really, really creepy. You will have no idea if GMO food has been added or even the potency of the vitamins and minerals of any of the store bought shakes since it not a regulation to list these things accurately. I believe the products you can buy only from a Doctor will be good quality and an acceptable substitute for Usana products.
That being said, to protect your health make sure they meet, at the minimum, the following standards:
Low-glycemic, complete meal replacement shakes and bars with good fat, good protein and low-glycemic carbohydrates. (PCC has low glycemic bars made of whole berries, seeds and nuts that taste ok)

No posions: This list comes from the Cleaning out the Pantry download from Getting Started Introduction to the HealthyEdge 8 Week Group Session The HealthyEdge Sessions 4 & 5 will go into extensive detail about reading food labels. It is shocking, disgusting and just plain wrong what is in our food. These basic guild lines are an excellent beginning.

I rationalize (*See my article about rationalization and why you need a Weight Loss Coach for Permanent Weight Loss) I think the combination slows the sugar spike which is the beginning of Insulin Resistance.
No posions: This list comes from my 8 Week Group Session. Lessons 4 & 5 will go into extensive detail about reading food labels. It is shocking, disgusting and just plain wrong what is in our food. These basic guild lines are an excellent beginning.

American Suppliment Industry Scam

Though I am very much against Government regulations this is what we get without any standards. Profit at the cost of YOUR health.

In its latest review of multivitamins, ConsumerLab.com found defects in over 30% of the multivitamins that it selected for review. And many products exceeded tolerable upper limits for certain vitamins or minerals. Specific problems found in the multivitamin reviews include:

Three of four popular children's multivitamins reviewed were too high in vitamin A.

One men's multivitamin was contaminated with lead and another had too much folic acid -- associated with more than doubling the risk of prostate cancer.

One general multivitamin had no more than 50% of its folic acid. Another was missing 30% of its calcium.
A senior's, a prenatal, and a women's multivitamin each had only 44.1%, 44.3%, and 66.1%, respectively, of their vitamin A.

A vitamin water had 15 times its stated amount of folic acid, so drinking one bottle would exceed the tolerable limit for adults; less than half a bottle would put children over the limit.

A pet multivitamin was contaminated with lead and another had only 46% of its vitamin A and 54.7% of its calcium.

The only products I have found that can be purchased without a Doctor's prescription come from a company called Usana http://gethealthyreleaseweight.usana.com/.

Their Supplements are on list of the top 25 products for ConsumerLab.com and the have received a 5 Star rating from the Comparable Guide to Nutritional Supplements published by Lyle MacWilliams MSc, FP.

NOT Good Food to Lose Weight

I think of the hamburger that wouldn't die each time I drive by fast food row. For all of you stopping I suggest you read Eric Schlosser's book, "The Fast Food Nation" (published by Perennial 2002) and get an insight into this industry. Eric Schlosser relates in his book that in 1970, Americans spent about $6 billion dollars on fast food; in 2001, they spent more than $110 billion. Americans now spend more money on fast food than on higher education, personal computers, or new cars. They spend more on fast food than on movies, books, magazines, newspapers, videos, and recorded music combined.

The fast food industry is getting more and more of our dollars spent on food in this country and the rest of it is going to health care since the stuff we eat at fast food is killing us. Fast food has replaced home cooked meals. White bread, white flour, potatoes, rice, soda drinks, and a touch of lettuce and maybe a thin slice of tomato covering a highly fat-saturated piece of meat. If this is not bad enough, our potatoes are usually cooked in 320 degree lard (or vegetable fat, which at these high temperatures creates even more rancid fat) and then we boldly state "Oh, by the way, Super-Size it". Another great movie inspiration.

It is estimated that the average American eats three hamburgers and four orders of french fries each and every week. The marketing has been very effective. Except for the lettuce and tomatoes most of what you order and eat at a fast food restaurant is canned, frozen, dehydrated, or freeze-dried. It is the epitome of highly processed carbohydrates and also loaded with high saturated fats. And all the processing, canning, freezing, dehydrating kills the foods taste. So all the flavor needs to be put back, usually with the help of lots and lots of heart stopping sodium. Not a pretty picture.

There is another way to live - It's easy, its cheaper than eating out and lots more fun than a heart attach or stroke.
